This series has always been one of my favorite action arcade games and is in my opinion almost better than Super Mario Bros. After the title screen, you end up at the character selection screen. You have a choice between four characters you can play.

You could choose Thor, with his lethal battle axe, or Thyra, the valkyrie, with her lethal magic sword. On the other hand, there is also Questor the elf, with his deadly aim, bow, and arrows, or perhaps Merlin, the wizard, with his bolts of lightning and fire will suite your taste.

Each character attacks are equally powerful. Gameplay seems simple at first, but, believe me, this game is hard. The controls consist of moving the character with the arrow keys, using enter to fire, and the spacebar to clear out enemies with magic.

Enemies stream out of generators in the levels. Make sure you destroy the generators as quickly as possible, or otherwise hordes of enemies will surround you in no time and make sure your character is pushing up daisies.

Enemies range from mummies to ghosts and even the Grim Reaper. Reception Gauntlet received mixed reviews from critics. Gaming website Shacknews stated that "so far, it looks like Gauntlet properly captures much of the spirit that made the arcade game so much fun", while also stating that the game isn't very intuitive in terms of figuring out the unlocked mechanics as you progress through the game.

Chris Brown of New Zealand website Gameplanet stated "Gauntlet scratches an itch I didn't realise I had", finding it "simple, but not brainless" but also "fun as hell"; he also highlighted the user interface in their preview build as "awkward. Go figure: I really didn't enjoy this game very much in arcades because of its slow, methodical pace, but it is exactly that characteristic that makes it a much better home video game.

Gauntlet Legend's slowpaced action is a nice change-up to what I'm used to--it's something you can really relax and play. The best thing about the game college kids pay attention now is that it's four-player capability lends itself perfectly to a few friends lounging around while downing a few beers--I could even think of a few decent drinking games while one guy drinks, the other three protect him.

Those bad habits aside, it's worth your time to check this one out. Although it's an excellent port of the arcade game, it's hard for me to get excited about Legends. Yes multiplayer is fun for a bit--with so many different power-ups and items there are lots of opportunities for teamwork or screwing over your friends, and building up your character's abilities RPG-style is cool. But ultimately there just isn't enough technique or skill involved, so the game boils down to a pretty straightforward hack-and-slash action game.

That'd be fine if it was fast-paced and exciting, but alt the backtracking and getting lost trying to find switches grinds the game to a halt way too often. Rent it with friends if you liked it in the arcade. Midway isn't wasting any time bringing Atari's latest quarter-muncher to the home arena.
